Secretary of State Salary

Early Life

Mike Pompeo was born on December 30, 1963, in Orange, California. He is the son of Dorothy and Wayne Pompeo. His paternal grandparents emigrated to the United States in 1899 and 1900 from Abruzzo, Italy. Pompeo attended Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley, California, and played forward on the basketball team. He graduated from the school in 1982.

After high school, Pompeo then enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point and majored in engineering management. While there, he was a classmate of Brian Bulateo and Ulrich Brechbuhl, who later helped Pompeo found Thayer Aerospace. Mike graduated from West Point in 1986. From 1986 to 1991, Pompeo served in the U.S. Army as an armor officer with the West Germany-based 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the 4th Infantry Division. He served as a tank platoon leader before becoming a cavalry troop executive officer and then later the squadron maintenance officer. Pompeo left the U.S. Army with the rank of captain. In 1994, he earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. While there, he was an editor of the "Harvard Law Review" and the "Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy."

Career

After graduating from law school, Pompeo worked as a lawyer for Williams & Connolly in Washington. In 1996, he moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he and three West Point friends acquired three aircraft-parts manufacturers there and in St. Louis. They renamed the entity Thayer Aerospace. In 2006, Mike sold his interest in the company. Pompeo then became president of Sentry International, an oilfield equipment manufacturer that was also a partner of Koch Industries.

Pompeo then switched the trajectory of his career in order to get involved in politics. From 2011, he represented Kansas's 4th congressional district. He served on the United States Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the United States House Energy Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection, the United States House Energy Subcommittee on Energy, the United States House Intelligence Subcommittee on the CIA, and the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi. He was also a member of the Congressional Constitution Caucus and was an original sponsor of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015. He served as the representative until January 2017.

In January 2019, Pompeo began a diplomatic tour of the Middle East to assure regional U.S. partners that, amid the sudden withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, the U.S. mission to destroy the Islamic State had not changed. The tour included stops in Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, and the Gulf nations.
