About seven years ago, former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin and his wife Lisa listed there lavish mansion in the Windermere neighborhood near Orlando at almost $11 million. Unfortunately for them, they were unable to find a buyer at that price, and now they've listed it again for significantly less money according to The Wall Street Journal. Now, the asking price is at a relatively modest $5.4 million.
Why haven't they been able to find anyone to take the house off of their hands? Larkin says it's because it's too idiosyncratic, built to their personal tastes without as much in the way of mass appeal:
"It's going to take a specific buyer to see what we have here."
What they have here is a sprawling, lakefront 14,477-square-foot mansion in an exclusive gated community with an extremely unusual interior, starting with the large starburst mosaic on the floor of the entry hall. There are also two twin staircases in glass, double aquariums, and a domed ceiling, all combining to create a visual impression of an elaborate institutional space like a hospital, library, or museum, instead of a typical home.
Unusually bold colors recur throughout the house, like the electric blue cabinets in the kitchen and the purple carpet and columns in red, blue, and purple in the home movie theater.
Altogether the mansion has seven bedrooms, a game room, a home gym, a professional-quality recording studio, and in what used to be a baseball conditioning room, a fully-fledged nightclub with a DJ booth, reportedly once used for a party by their daughter Cymber, who now has a career as a recording artist. Out back there's a swimming pool and a multipurpose sports court, naturally in bright blue.
The Larkins say the house was designed to indulge the couple's three kids, who are said to have been allowed to run and even skateboard around the house as they pleased.
