An American citizen since 1994, he accumulated his billion-worth fortune in his native Russia during the privatization of the country's industry. At the time, he became close friend with fellow oligarch Roman Abramovich who gave Shvidler a 370-foot yacht, Le Grand Bleu, as a sign of respect to their firm friendship. Shvidler's interests include a share in the Russian steelmaker Evraz and a spacious property in France.
